Ethos and Values Statement for Cobden Primary School
Cobden Primary School is a 2 form, diverse primary school located in the centre of Loughborough. With limited outdoor space, the school serves a community with high levels of pupil premium (43%) and SEND (24%) students, as well as a large proportion of children with English as an additional language (60%).
Vision
Cobden Primary School’s vision is to provide a nurturing, inclusive, and academically ambitious environment where every child can thrive and reach their full potential. We are committed to developing the whole child – academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually – to equip them with the knowledge, skills, and character to succeed in the modern world.
Core Values
At the heart of our school are four key values that guide our work and shape our community:
Caring
We believe in fostering a culture of empathy, kindness, and compassion. Our staff and students look out for one another, celebrate diversity, and show respect for all members of our community.
Resilient
We instil in our children the ability to overcome challenges, learn from mistakes, and persevere in the face of adversity. Our curriculum and pastoral support systems help build their confidence and determination.
Ambitious
We have high expectations for the academic progress and personal development of all our students. We challenge them to aim high, take risks, and strive for excellence in everything they do.
Proud
We inspire our children to take pride in their school, their community, and their own achievements. We celebrate their successes, both big and small, and encourage them to be confident, self-assured individuals.
Educational Approach
Cobden Primary School’s educational approach is underpinned by our ethos and values. We deliver a broad, balanced, and enriching curriculum that not only focuses on core academic subjects, but also provides abundant opportunities for children to explore the arts, sports, and extracurricular activities.
Our teaching methods emphasise active, engaging, and adapted learning, catering to the diverse needs and learning styles of our students. We place a strong emphasis on developing children’s critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills, preparing them for the challenges of the 21st century.
Importantly, we also prioritise the social, emotional, and mental wellbeing of our students. Through our pastoral care system, PSHE curriculum, and nurturing school environment, we support the holistic development of each child, ensuring they feel safe, valued, and empowered to reach their full potential.
Putting our Ethos into Practice
At Cobden Primary School, our ethos and values are not just words on a page – they are actively lived out in the daily life of our school community.
For example, our students regularly participate in community service projects, such as litter picking, fundraising for local charities, and visiting elderly residents. These activities foster a sense of social responsibility and help children develop their caring and resilient qualities.
Our school also celebrates the diverse cultural backgrounds of our students through themed events, international food festivals, and opportunities to share traditions and customs. This promotes mutual respect, understanding, and pride in our vibrant, multicultural community.
Furthermore, our staff are committed role models who embody our values. They go the extra mile to support children, both academically and pastorally, and work collaboratively to continuously improve our provision. This dedication and professionalism inspires our students to be ambitious in their own learning and development.
By consistently living out our ethos and values, Cobden Primary School strives to be a beacon of excellence – a place where children feel safe, nurtured, and empowered to reach their full potential, and where staff, parents, and the wider community work together to create a better future for all.
